Now granted I should be behind this guy, being a mexican from Anaheim (as my family is) but what the fuck.. Since October of 2002, he's beaten 6 no-name fighters, No Contested with Kirk Johnson, and lost to 5 guys, notable names are Jonathon Banks (cruiserweight) and Sultan Ibragimov. His last fight is a loss in an 8 round (MD).. Yet he is going to fight Alexander Povetkin? How is this even sanctioned?

QUOTE How the hell does Javier Mora have such a high rating? He doesn't. He's not rated in the top 15 by a single sanctioning organization. |

I was mistaking what was actually Povetkins ratings as Mora's... But still how does this fight hold Povetkins ratings, arent they required to fight within the top 15? Or is that simply for the champions? |

Povetkin should have really spent the last couple of years fighting guys like Sam Peter, Chris Arreola, Fres Oquendo and Monte Barrett instead of Taurus Sykes, Jason Estrada, Leo Nolan and Javier Mora. None of those guys are even top 25 heavies.

None of those guys are even top 25 heavies. He fought Larry Donald, Chris Byrd and Eddie Chambers in his 13th, 14th and 15th professional fights. That's pretty damn impressive. Compare that with, for example, Vitali Klitschko. Vitali wasn't fighting anyone that good or accomplished until somewhere between his 25-30th fight. 2009 was definitely a disappointing year, though. |

So Povetkin is Wlad's mandatory right? He should be taking on guys around the size of Wlad, hell if he's going to take an easy fight before Wlad, I can understand that, but instead of Mora, maybe someone like Julius Long or Tye Fields would be better fit to get used to the size difference a little bit.

I was thinking about someone like Dimitrenko, but I saw that they already fought. There has to be someone better than Mora - he's not much better than a sparring partner. |

Actually that would have been a good fight. Dimitrenko did lose his last fight, but it was against Fast Eddie Chambers, not a horrible opponent to lose to, certainly a better fight then Javier Mora. I guess the only way to see this fight is just as a stay busy fight, but still a better fighter should have been chosen. |

He's the mandatory for wlad already and has a new trainer, so inguess they want to stay relatively risk free.
He can fight whoever he wants regardless of ranking. When Byrd was ibf champ he fought a non title fight against a journeyman I believe. Unless it's a title fight and as long as the commission are happy to sanction it, you can box whoever. |

Well the rules for most sanctioning bodies, Im assuming IBF, WBA, WBC are that the champ has to fight someone ranked in the top 15. Which has lead to quite the controversy with certain Don King champions fighting certain Don King fighters that happened to get ranked #15 despite losing their last 2 fights. I assumed the #1 ranked contender be held to the same, but I guess I was being ignorant. Apparantly if a fighter wanted to they could maintain their #1 status fighting fighters with 1-0 records and shit like that. |

I do believe a champ can fight non title fights vs unranked guys though.
obviously if it was too much if a mismatch hopefully the comission wouldnt sanction it though. James toney used to have non title fights when at 160/168. |
