Question is when you see all his support does it not bother Mexican Americans that he considers them half Mexican? I mean he did not want to lose to Juan Diaz because Juan Diaz is not a real Mexican. So you would think Americans would support Diaz and root against JMM? What am I missing?
Hundreds of fans braved the heat at the famed Placita Olvera in Los Angeles today to welcome and cheer on Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez before he heads to Las Vegas to face Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz in “Fight of the Year: The Rematch” on pay-per-view July 31 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Over 300 fans showed their support for Mexico’s “Numero Uno” and Marquez reciprocated that support by signing autographs for over two hours in the blazing sun. “I was so happy that all of the fans came out to support me today,” said Marquez. “Arriving in the United States really makes me feel like the fight is almost here. I want to make the Mexican people proud and to be victorious on July 31.” |

I was gonna bring this up in your Cain thread. Mexicans don't seem to like American born Mexicans for whatever reason (at least the athletes). I remember that being a big issue with Vargas and De La Hoya and what not. Trying to prove who was more Mexican. I guess when you have nothing else going for your country, claiming full breed status in sports is important.

Mexicans are difficult to understand. Look at DJ. He bashes America and praises Mexico, and he was born here.

Mexicans are difficult to understand. Mexicans can be difficult to understand. A Mexican/Mexican-American fight fan usually roots for fighters that best "represents" them. That's why a fighter like DLH never was loved by the masses. He was too much of a pretty boy, too much of a businessman, too focused on safety first. A Mexican American fighter like Vargas was belovedby Mexican Americans and most US based first generation Mexicans I know because he was balls to the wall, macho, and willing to mix it up with anyone. Fighters like Barrera and Morales were beloved by both Mexican/Mexian-American fight fans I know because of their all action fights. A fighter like JMM wasn't as popular during his early/mid career because he had more skill as a boxer. JMM didn't get his 'recognition' until he took Pacquiao's best and got off the mat 3x to get the draw in the first fight (in addition to his wins over Casamayor and Diaz). However there the side of the border you're on seems to stokes the flames between Mexico and the US. It's a macho thing..... |

For me it goes back to when Oscar was first coming up and Arum was trying to force feed him to the masses. I think the Mexican fans resented the fact that he was basically trying to replace JCC. Problem is, JCC is like Jesus to those people. There's nothing Oscar could have done to replace him in their eyes. Plus the fact that JCC never really gave him props publicaly didn't help. If JCC had said in an in interview in Mexico that he thought Oscar was a great fighter with alot of heart, all his sheep I think would have liked Oscar for representing. But that of course didn't happen.
It truly is an odd dichotomy. Makes me think of that scene in "Selena" where her dad is talking about how they have to be more "Mexican" than the Mexicans, and more "American" than the "Americans" all at the same time. |
